Course
CASMaT International Summer School 2026
Theory and concepts behind advanced multiscale testing of structures and materials
About the course
The summer school is organized in a collaboration between the Department of Wind and Energy Systems and the Department of Civil and Mechanical Engineering through their common research facility, the Villum Center for Advanced Structural and Material Testing.
The objectives of the summer school are to introduce the theory and concepts behind advanced multiscale testing of structures and materials – with composite materials and structures as a case – and to allow the students to get hands on experience with the most important, advanced measuring techniques and methodologies. The course is designed for PhD students and final year graduate students with a basic understanding of material and structural mechanics, however both academic and industrial participation is encouraged.
Registration deadline
Registration will close July 3, 2025.
NB! There will be a maximum of 30 course participants
Registration Fee
Student fee: EUR 450.
Industrial participation: EUR 2000.
This is for you if…
You are a PhD student or a final-year graduate student with a basic understanding of material and structural mechanics. Both academic and industrial participants are encouraged to apply.
Maximum number of students: 30
Course Outline
The general outline of the course is as follows:
-
1 week equivalent of preparatory reading (remote)
-
1 week of lab work and lectures (physical presence required)
-
1 week equivalent of report writing (remote)
An introductory online lecture with presentation of scope, practical details and preparatory reading material will be given one month in advance of the week with lab work and lectures at DTU. The main body of the course consists of 4 days with a combination of lectures and hands-on experimental work:
Day 1:Data acquisition and instrumentation.
Day 2: Material scale: Advanced materials testing.
Day 3: Full scale: Digital twinning.
Day 4: Subcomponent scale: Advanced substructural testing.
On the 5th day, the physical presence on campus is concluded with assignment work, course evaluation and guest lectures by international experts on selected topics.
The workload of the course corresponds to 5 ECTS points.
