InnoWind: Innovation for global wind energy exploitation on land using satellites

Objective:
The objective in this project is to utilize a new generation of European satellites from Copernicus for improved characterization of land surfaces (in terms of quality and global coverage) and a higher accuracy of wind resource modeling and to stimulate an uptake of new European satellite data and products (i.e. downstream services) in the wind energy community

Expected outcome:
The project will document the effect of implementing existing Copernicus satellite products in flow models for wind energy resource assessment. It will deliver new and validated algorithms for retrieval of wind energy specific surface parameters and new downstream products. Finally, it will propose a ranking of different surface parameters according to their importance for wind energy resource assessment and the cost of wind energy installation on land.

The project began on April 1 2017 and runs for 4 years.
