Risø – now a DTU Campus
Risø was originally established in 1958 as a national center for nuclear power research. In 1973, the oil crisis sparked a political debate about the use of nuclear power, which led to the closure of Risø's nuclear power research a few years later. Instead, the focus shifted to research in alternative energy, including wind turbines.
Risø has played an important role in the development of wind turbine technology in Denmark and internationally. At Risø, tests and certifications of wind turbines according to international standards have been carried out, software and models for calculating wind turbine design, wind resources, and energy production have been developed, and new concepts and materials for wind turbine blades, towers, and foundations have been explored.
Risø became part of the Technical University of Denmark (DTU) in 2007.
