About scientific advice
Scientific advice is a main activity at DTU Wind and Energy Systems, alongside research, education, and innovation. We provide independent, research-based knowledge, data, and analytical tools to authorities, national and international organisations in Denmark and globally. Our advice draws on research and the tools we develop in-house, helping partners make transparent and well-informed decisions throughout the energy transition.

What we advise on
We advise across the full arc of the energy transition, from assessing resources to designing the markets and systems that integrate them.
How we work
Our advice combines three things the transition depends on: technology, markets, and policy. We ground recommendations in current research and in tools we develop and maintain ourselves. Through close dialogue with partners, we help identify the most relevant solutions and provide analysis that is both scientifically robust and applicable to real-world challenges.
Case 1: The Global Wind Atlas
Developed at DTU and launched in 2015, the Global Wind Atlas has become the world's leading source of free wind resource data and maps. The platform attracts approximately 60,000 users each month from 240 countries and territories.
Case 2: Offshore wind feasibility – Mauritius
At the invitation of the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) and the Republic of Mauritius, DTU conducted a prefeasibility study of offshore wind around the island. The study assessed wind resources, identified suitable locations for offshore wind farms, developed conceptual wind farm designs, and estimated energy production and the levelized cost of energy (LCOE) for potential developments.
Case 3: Wind Atlas for South Africa (WASA)
Building on decades of research in wind resource assessment and wind atlas development, DTU contributed to the development of South Africa's national wind atlas. Combining measurements, advanced modelling and validation, the project provided data and analyses to support wind resource assessment, renewable energy planning, and wind farm planning in South Africa.
