Inaugural Lecture Jalal Kazempour

We invite you to the inaugural lecture of Jalal Kazempour, "Balancing Complexity and Simplicity: Energy Market Design for a Renewable Future", who was appointed Professor in Energy Markets and Operation in August 2024.
About the lecture: To effectively integrate stochastic renewable energy sources and distributed flexible resources while accelerating sector coupling, energy markets—especially those nearing real-time operation—must adapt to reflect these complexities. At the same time, it remains a priority to maintain transparency, simplicity, and desirable economic properties in energy markets. This talk will explore this "paradox" and discuss how pragmatic market designs, products, services, bidding formats, and grid codes can reconcile system complexity with market simplicity. The crucial role of data, AI, and digitalization as enablers in addressing these challenges will be highlighted. Finally, key research directions for the future will be outlined.
Jalal Kazempour is a Full Professor at the DTU - Technical University of Denmark in the Department of Wind and Energy Systems, where he leads the Energy Markets and Analytics section and serves as the head of studies for the MSc program in Sustainable Energy Systems.
As an Associate Editor for Operations Research, Jalal's research focuses on market-oriented and data-driven strategies for operating modern power systems with renewables, integrating them with other sectors such as hydrogen, natural gas, and district heating.
His work encompasses optimization, game theory, control, and machine learning, aiming to enhance market designs and improve decision-making for stakeholders in the evolving energy landscape.
