Research and Testing Laboratories

PowerLabDK supports a broad range of activities across research, innovation, education, professional training, and commercial work. The combination of specialised laboratories, digital infrastructure, open energy data, and real-world energy assets allows users to develop, test, validate, and demonstrate new energy technologies throughout their entire development cycle.
  • Technology development and validation in controlled testing environments.
  • Performance, reliability, and safety assessment of energy technologies.
  • Testing of power systems, energy storage, electric mobility, and Power-to-X solutions.
  • Evaluation of integrated energy systems under realistic operating conditions.

Real-World Energy Systems

In addition to its research and testing facilities, DTU provides access to real-world energy environments where new technologies, operational strategies, and integrated energy solutions can be tested and validated under realistic conditions. The facilities include:

  • SYSLAB, an open and controllable energy system designed for testing and validating control solutions on live energy assets.
  • Innovation Island Bornholm, a renewable-based energy system that serves as a living laboratory for the demonstration and evaluation of future energy solutions.

Digital Research Infrastructure

PowerLabDK also provides a comprehensive digital research environment that supports advanced modelling, simulation, system analysis, and data-driven innovation. The digital infrastructure includes:
  • Real-Time Digital Simulationfor detailed simulation and validation of power and energy systems.
  • Digital Twins for developing and testing virtual representations of energy assets and control solutions.
  •  Energy Data DK, providing access to real-time and historical data from the Danish electricity system.
  •  Model Development Tools for visualising, analysing, and modelling energy systems and energy flows.
  •  Advanced Computing Facilities that utilise high-performance computing and artificial intelligence to support energy research.
