Offshore wind turbine farm

SELMA: Fail-safe Structural Optimization

Objectives:
The project develops models and numerical methods for fail-safe structural design for increased reliability. The project targets optimal design of both offshore support structures and composite structures such as blades in a common framework.

Expected Outcome:
Novel structural optimization techniques that can automatically design structures that are weight-optimal and fail-safe. The developed optimization techniques lead to significantly improved design processes. The resulting structures have increased safety against unexpected failure events and are more economical since they require less maintenance (repairs and inspection). This project addresses two different types of structures (offshore wind turbine support structures and wind turbine blades), which form a basis for future research on the topic.
