Objective
The overall objective of this project is to continue the contribution to the international IEA Wind Task 41 cooperation on Distributed Wind (DW) technology development and assessment, during the 2024-2026 period. This will be realized partly by exchanging and disseminating information, conducting analyses and explorative studies of particular interest for Danish stakeholders, in the form of reports and publications and partly by implementing a strong cross IEA Wind TPC Tasks collaboration effort. In addition, the new phase of IEA Wind Task 41 will address DW human dimensions to facilitate social acceptance of DW, which is also relevant for Danish society at large.
This project is organized into five work-packages (WPs), which closely follow five of the extended IEA Wind TPC Task 41 planned work-packages
• WP0: Management, coordination and dissemination
• WP1: Turbulence, siting, and standards
• WP2: Open-source data
• WP3: Grid and system integration
• WP4: Social acceptance
Expected outcome
The objectives of this EUDP project are closely mirroring the work packages (WPs) and the deliverables for the period 2024-2026 of the extended IEA Wind Task 41 (approved in Ex Co 90 meeting in November 2022). From a Danish perspective, this EUDP project aims to address several challenges formulated by IEA Task 41 concerning the four dominant research themes of standards and technical specifications, grid and system integration, social science, and information dissemination:
• Improved understanding, and IEC standards in relation to the impacts and sitting of DW are needed. This is especially true given the very wide variety of siting requirements, conditions, needs and desires of local communities.
• Increase opportunities to integrate wind with other renewables and couple with other technologies to support the future electricity grids, and hybrid energy systems.
• Expand engagement, social acceptance, and deployment for global DW markets to support turbine designs that address local needs and requirements.
• Improve outreach and collaboration with other tasks in the Wind TCP (Technology Collaboration Programmes), other TCPs with similar interests, and other international bodies related to the potential of DW technologies.
The expected results of IEA Wind task 41 are technical reports, journal articles, and other products that highlight key research findings; research results that can inform the fourth revision of the IEC 61400-2 standard (Wind turbines – design requirements for small wind turbines); established participation in conferences focused on small and medium wind turbines; and expanded collaboration and engagement in the distributed energy research fields.
This EUDP project aims to leverage the Danish experience and thus strengthen the Danish influence and participation in IEA collaborations, by bringing the extensive experience of Danish actors into play and learning from others around the world. This EUDP project will also promote the results of IEA Wind Task 41 in national and international forums. By supporting the work of the IEA Wind Task, this project will achieve and consolidate the Danish knowledge and experience within the DW area, increasing thus the competitiveness of wind and accelerating the phase-out of fossil-based fuels in Denmark.
This EUDP-project will gather and disseminate information about DW to the Danish stakeholders and provide useful recommendations and guidelines to IEA deliverables that can be used by both Danish industry, researchers and society at large.
This EUDP-project will also make it possible to promote the results of IEA Wind TCP Task 41 in national and international forums.
The participants in the project are DTU Wind, AAU-Energy and Nordic Folkecenter. DTU Wind is leading the project.
The project started January 1. 2024 and runs until 31.12.2026.
The total budget of the project: 2.12 mio. DKK.
