FloatLab

DTU Wind and DHI jointly operate the FloatLab test facility in DHI's deep-water basin in Hørsholm. FloatLab combines expertise in wind engineering and hydrodynamics in a single test environment, enabling testing of scaled floating wind turbines under combined wind and wave conditions.

About the Lab

The facility features one of the world's largest open-jet wind generators for floating wind testing in turbulent wind. The facility has been used to test a scale model of a 22 MW floating wind turbine and its floating foundation under realistic wind and wave conditions.

The test turbine and combined wind-wave environment can be used to evaluate a variety of floating foundations, mooring and turbine control systems, engineering and numerical models, and marine operations such as installation.

Key Capabilities

  • Ocean wave basin measuring 30 m × 20 m
  • 5x5 m open-jet wind generator with 25 individually controlled fans
  • 60 wave paddles enabling multidirectional wave conditions
  • Wind speeds up to 5 m/s (equivalent to 42 m/s at 1:70 scale)
  • Turbulence and wind shear generation
  • Test turbine with 4m rotor – 1:70 scaled IEA WIND 22 MW turbine
  • Options for software in the loop for hybrid testing
  • Integration with digital modelling and digital twin frameworks.

Technical Data

FloatLab combines an open-jet wind generator with a multidirectional wave basin and a comprehensive measurement system. Instrumentation includes a Qualisys motion capture system, accelerometers, wave gauges, hotwire gauges, force measurements, sectional load measurements, and hydrodynamic pressure measurements.
