Advanced blade tips enabled by additive manufacturing and jointed blades

Objective:
This project will develop the necessary blade technologies to fully utilize the design potential in jointed blades and specifically make use of additive manufacturing techniques to enable design of advanced aeroelastically tailored blade tips. This will be achieved through a continuation of a well-established partnership between the Danish wind industry and universities, in which state-of-the-art research-based design methods are matured and applied in an industrial context. Importantly, the project will experimentally validate and demonstrate these new design solutions with laboratory and full-scale field tests and thus reduce risks and shorten their time to market significantly. This will ultimately ensure that the cost of wind energy can continue to decrease.

Expected outcome:
The project expects to enable increased rotor sizes by up to 20% and to lead to 5-15% increase in AEP compared to conventional blades. With a targeted 4% decrease in LCOE the new technology has the potential to disrupt the market and could result in a yearly reduction in global CO2 emissions of 73-220 mill. tons, thereby strengthening Denmark’s enormous potential for green economic growth.
