Advanced VGs

Objective:
The project aims at increasing the efficiency of new and operating wind turbines by developing innovative vortex generators, that are small devices attached to the surface of blades, improving their efficiency and increasing energy production. This especially concerns blades with dirt or surface erosion.

Expected outcome:
The project aims to develop a new VG geometry with reduced drag. Also improved numerical models of VGs for CFD (blade inboard part) as well as XFOIL (blade outboard part) will be validated against wind tunnel measurements. Finally, the new VGs will be validated in situ on a 2MW wind turbine to show an improved annual energy production.

The project started April 1, 2020 and runs until March 1, 2022.

Total project budget: 6,595,000 DKK.
